Weights are calculated from the sizes and the material density. Section weights are estimates because corner radii are ignored. Catalogue weights are exact for the supplied section.
Formulas and common questions
How do I calculate the weight of rebar?
Weight per metre = d² × 0.006165 kg, where d is the bar diameter in mm. A 12 mm bar weighs 0.888 kg per metre, so a 12 m bar weighs about 10.65 kg. A #4 bar (1/2 inch) weighs 0.668 lb per foot.
How do I calculate the weight of a steel plate?
Weight in kg = length (m) × width (m) × thickness (mm) × 7.85. A 1000 × 1000 × 10 mm mild steel plate weighs 78.5 kg. For other metals use their density instead of 7850 kg/m³: aluminium 2700, copper 8960, brass 8500, stainless steel about 8000.
How is checker (chequered) plate weight calculated?
Take the weight of a flat plate of the base thickness and add an allowance for the raised pattern, commonly about 2 to 3 kg per m² for steel. The exact figure depends on the pattern and the maker, so use the mill's chart for a contract weight. For example, 6 mm checker plate is about 47.1 + 2 = 49.1 kg per m².
How much weight does galvanizing add?
Hot-dip galvanizing adds zinc to every surface. ISO 1461 sets average coating thickness by steel thickness: 45 microns under 1.5 mm, 55 microns from 1.5 to under 3 mm, 70 microns from 3 to under 6 mm and 85 microns from 6 mm up. One micron of zinc is about 7.14 g per m², so 85 microns is about 607 g per m². The result is usually a few percent of the steel weight, more for thin steel and less for thick.
How do I find the weight of GI sheet?
Weight = steel (length × width × thickness × 7850) + zinc (coating mass in g per m² × area). A coating such as Z180 means 180 g per m² on both faces together. For corrugated sheet use the flat width before corrugating.
How do I find the weight of GI pipe?
Use the plain steel pipe weight, which is π × wall × (outside diameter − wall) × 7850 per metre (sizes in metres), and add the zinc coating on the inside and outside. Choose Galvanized iron (GI) as the material. A 2 inch medium pipe (60.3 × 3.6 mm) weighs 5.03 kg per metre before galvanizing.
How do I calculate the weight of angle, channel and beam?
Estimate the cross-section area, multiply by the density and the length. Angle area = thickness × (A + B − thickness). Channel and beam area = 2 × flange width × flange thickness + (height − 2 × flange thickness) × web thickness. This leaves out corner radii, so catalogue weights run a few percent higher. Type the catalogue weight per metre to get an exact weight.
How many bags of cement are in a cubic metre of concrete?
For a 1:2:4 mix, one cubic metre of wet concrete needs about 1.54 m³ of dry materials, which is about 317 kg of cement or 6.3 bags of 50 kg, 0.44 m³ of sand and 0.88 m³ of coarse aggregate before wastage. One cubic metre of plain concrete weighs about 2400 kg.
How do I convert between kg and pounds, or mm and inches?
1 kg = 2.2046 lb and 1 lb = 0.4536 kg. 1 inch = 25.4 mm and 1 foot = 0.3048 m. Every size box has its own unit list, so you can type the number in the unit you already have.
